Facebook is a social networking service and website that was launched in February 2004 that is operated and owned by Facebook, Inc.. In January 2011 , Facebook has more than 600 million active users. The user can create a personal profile, add other users as friends and exchange messages, including automatic notifications when they update their profile. In addition, users can join a group of users who have a specific purpose, sorted by place of work, school, college, or other characteristics. Service name is derived from the name of the book given to students in the first academic year by university administrations in the U.S. with the goal of helping students get to know each other. Facebook allows anyone aged at least 13 years as a registered user on this site.

Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg with his roommate and fellow computer science students Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. Membership website was originally limited to Harvard students only, then expanded to other colleges in Boston, Ivy League, and Stanford University . This site is slowly opening up to students at other universities before it opened to high school students, and eventually to every person aged at least 13 years.
January 2009 Compete.com study puts social networking service Facebook as the most widely used according to monthly active users around the world, followed by MySpace.  Entertainment Weekly put it in the list of "best" end of the decade with the comment, "How are we stalking ex- our beloved, remember the anniversary of our colleagues, annoying our friends, and play a game of Scrabulous before Facebook was created? " Quantcast estimates that Facebook had 135.1 million visitors monthly in the U.S. in October 2010.  According to Social Media Today April 2010, estimated that 41.6% of Americans have a Facebook account

History

Mark Zuckerberg created FaceMash, the predecessor of Facebook, dated October 28, 2003 when he was at Harvard as a sophomore. According to The Harvard Crimson, the site is similar to Hot or Not, and use "images obtained from facebook  online in nine dorms, put two pictures side by side at a time and prompts the user to choose which one of the most sexy".

To accomplish this, Zuckerberg hacking into the Harvard computer network is protected and copy the pictures private dormitory ID. Harvard at the time did not have a "face book" (the directory containing photos and basic information) students. FaceMash attracted 450 visitors and 22,000 image on the first four hours on the air.

The site is immediately forwarded to several campus group servers, but turned off a few days later by the Harvard administration. Zuckerberg was convicted through campus security, violating copyrights and violating individual privacy, and threatened issued. However, the penalty was canceled. Zuckerberg initially expand this project in the semester to make tools of social studies to art history final exams, with 500 paintings Augusta upload to the website, with one image per page with the comment.  He opened the site to his classmates, and they began to share notes.

In the following semester, Zuckerberg began writing code for a new website in January 2004. He was inspired, he says, by The Harvard Crimson editorial about the incident FaceMash. On February 4, 2004, Zuckerberg launched "Thefacebook" which was originally located on the site thefacebook.com.
Six days after the site was launched, three Harvard seniors, Cameron Winklevoss, Tyler Winklevoss, and Divya Narendra, accuses Zuckerberg deliberately distract them so that they believe it helps them create a social network called HarvardConnection.com, while he uses their ideas to create a rival product .  All three complained to the Harvard Crimson, and this newspaper started an investigation. Three senior filed a lawsuit against Zuckerberg is finally resolved.
Membership was initially restricted to Harvard College students only, and the first month, more than half of undergraduate students at Harvard are listed on this site.  Eduardo Saverin (businessman), Dustin Moskovitz (programmer), Andrew McCollum (graphic artist), and Chris Hughes soon joined Zuckerberg to help promote this website. In March 2004, Facebook expanded to Stanford himself, Columbia, and Yale.  The site is then opened to other Ivy League schools, Boston University, New York University, MIT, and slowly a few universities in Canada and the United States.

Facebook incorporated in the summer of 2004, and entrepreneur Sean Parker, who often give advice to Zuckerberg, was appointed president of the company.  In June 2004, Facebook moved its operations center to Palo Alto, California.  The company received its first investment in month from PayPal co founder Peter Thiel.  The company is removing from its name after buying the domain name facebook.com in 2005 with a value of $ 200,000.
Facebook launched a high school version in September 2005 that Zuckerberg is considered as the next logical step. At that time, the network of high schools require an invitation to join. Facebook later expanded membership requirements to employees of several companies, including Apple Inc.. and Microsoft.  Facebook later opened on 26 September 2006 to everyone aged 13 years and above with a valid email address.
On October 24, 2007, Microsoft announced that it has bought 1.6% stake in Facebook valued at $ 240 million, giving Facebook a value of $ 15 billion. The purchase by Microsoft include their rights to place international ads on Facebook. Months October 2008, Facebook announced that they will open an international headquarters in Dublin, Ireland. In September 2009, Facebook said that they experienced positive cash flow for the first time. In November 2010, according to SecondMarket Inc.., a stock private company shares, the value of Facebook at $ 41 billion (beat eBay in thin) and became the third largest web companies in the U.S. after Google and Amazon. Facebook has been targeted as potential candidates for an initial public offering in 2013.

Traffic to Facebook increased steadily after 2009. Number of visitors up to beat Google on March 13, 2010. Facebook has also become the top social networking out of eight individual markets in Asia, namely the Philippines, Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Vietnam, while other brands still retain their top position in several markets, including Google's Orkut in India, Mixi.jp in Japan, CyWorld in South Korea, and Wretch.cc property of Yahoo! in Taiwan.

Company

Most of the revenue comes from advertising Facebook. Microsoft is the exclusive partner for serving up banner ads, and Facebook only serves advertisements that fall into Microsoft's ad inventory. According to comScore, an Internet marketing research company, Facebook is getting data from the visitors as much as Google and Microsoft, but slightly less than Yahoo!. In 2010, Facebook's security team began to expand its efforts to reduce the risk of user privacy. In 6 November 2007, Facebook launched Facebook Beacon which later became the failed attempt to advertise to the user's friends use "what you buy friends".

Facebook generally have a click rate (CTR) for ads lower than major web sites other. For banner ads, they receive one-fifth the number of clicks on Facebook when compared with the Web as a whole.  This means that a small percentage of Facebook users click on ads more than other web sites. For example, a user first clicks on an ad on Google search results with an average of 8% in one time (80,000 clicks for every one million searches),  while Facebook users click on ads by an average of 0.04% at a time (400 click for every one million pages).
Sarah Smith, formerly Operations Manager Online Sales up, admit that they have an advertising campaign click rates as low as 0.05% to 0.04%, and the click rate for ads tend to decline in two weeks. [evel click on the social networking rival, MySpace, compared to around 0.1%, 2.5 times better than Facebook but still low compared to other web sites. The explanation for the low level of clicks Facebook is that Facebook users are more tech savvy and use ad blocking software to hide ad, younger users more and more clever in ignoring advertising messages. On MySpace, users spend more time exploring its contents, while in Facebook, users spend their time communicating with friends and their attention diverted from advertising.

In the pages of brands and products, a number of companies reported as high as 6.49% click rate for Wall posts. Involver, a social marketing platform, announced in July 2008 that they were trying to gain a level of 0.7% click on the Facebook (10 times more higher than the level of click ad campaigns Facebook) for his first client, Serena Software, who tried to change the look of a 8.000 1.1 million visits to their sites. Studies show that for video ads on Facebook, almost 40% of users who see the video witnessed the whole, while the industry average is 25% for video banner ads.

Facebook has more than 1,700 employees and offices in 12 countries. Regarding the ownership of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg owns 24% shares of the company, Accel Partners 10%, Digital Sky Technologies 10%,  6% Dustin Moskovitz, Eduardo Saverin 5% Sean Parker 4%, 3% Peter Thiel, Greylock Partners and Meritech Capital Partners between 1-2%, respectively, 1.3% Microsoft, Li Ka-shing 0.75%, Interpublic Group of less than 0.5%, a small group of employees and former employees and celebrities each have less than 1%, including Matt Cohler, Jeff Rothschild, Adam D'Angelo, Chris Hughes, and Owen Van Natta, while Reid Hoffman and Mark Pincus has a rather large holdings in these companies, and 30% remaining owned by employees, a number of celebrities, and foreign investors.  Adam D'Angelo, president of technology and Zuckerberg's friend, resigned in May 2008. Some reports claim that he and Zuckerberg started fighting, and he was no longer interested in the ownership of this company.

On 15 November 2010, Facebook announced that they have obtained from the American Farm Bureau FB.com Association with a value that is not mentioned. On January 11, 2011, Farm Bureau announced the "realm of sales revenue" of $ 8.5 million, so the purchase FB.com become one of the ten most expensive domain sale in history.
Website

Users can create profiles with photos, lists of personal interests, contact information, and other personal information. Users can communicate with friends and other users through private or public messages and chat features. They can also create and join interest groups and "favorite pages" (formerly called "fan page" until 19 April 2010), some of which are managed by many organizations for the purpose of advertising.

To prevent complaints about privacy, Facebook allows users to set their privacy and to choose who can view certain parts of their profile.  This web site is free for users and take advantage by advertising such as banner ads.  Facebook requires user name and profile picture (if any) to be accessible by everyone. Users can control who can see the information they share, is also found through the search by using the privacy settings.

The media often compare Facebook to MySpace, but one major difference between the two sites is kustomisasinya level.  Another difference is the requirement that users can set up their original identity, and the steps are not implemented on MySpace.  MySpace allows users decorate their profiles using HTML and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), while Facebook only allows raw text. Facebook has a number of features that can interact with users. One of them is a wall, a box on every page that allows the user profiles of their friends to send a message to that user;  dab, which lets users send a "poke" each other virtual (notification telling users that they have dicolek);  Photos, where users can upload albums and photos; and Status, which allows users to tell their friends about their whereabouts and actions at that time. Depending on privacy settings, anyone who can view a user profile can also see the Wall the user. In July 2007, Facebook began allowing users to send attachments on the Wall, which is different from the previous wall limited to text content only.

Over time, Facebook added a feature to its site. On 6 September 2006, launched the News Feed that is placed on each main page and notify users of information such as profile changes, the next event, and the user's friend's birthday. This allows the sending of spam and other users manipulation these features to create events anniversary of false or a lie in order to draw attention to the profile or the campaign. Initially, the News Feed led to dissatisfaction among Facebook users; some of whom complain of being too cluttered and full of unnecessary information, while other users take it easy for users to track the activities of a person (such as changes in relationship status, events, and conversations with other users).

In response, Zuckerberg sent his apology for the failure to incorporate the features of this site that you can set your own privacy. Since then, users begin to get control over what types of information that can be shared automatically with friends. Now users are able to prevent a group of friends see updates activities such as profile changes, Wall posts, and newly added friends.

Dated February 23, 2010, Facebook granted a patent  to a series of aspects of her News Feed. This patent covers the News Feed when the link is sent so that a user can participate in activities just like other users.  This patent is pushing Facebook to take action against sites that violate its patents, such as Twitter.

One of the most popular applications on Facebook is the Photos, where users can upload albums and photos.  Facebook allows users to upload an unlimited number of photos, compared to the image storage service such as Photobucket and Flickr are limiting the number of images you can upload one. In the early years, Facebook users are limited to upload 60 photos per album. In May 2009, this limit was raised to 200 photos per album.

Privacy settings can be set for individual albums that restrict group of users who can view it. For example, the privacy of an album are arranged so that only the user's friends can see it, while the privacy of another album arranged so that all Facebook users can view it. Another feature of the Photos application is its ability to "tag", or mark the user in a photo. For example, if a photo contains a user's friends, then the user can tag friends in photos. Such actions send a notice to a friend who marked and give them the link to view the image.

Users can import blogs from Xanga, LiveJournal, Blogger and other blog services.  Throughout the week of 7 April 2008, Facebook released a Comet-based instant messaging applications named "Chat" to a number of profiles, which allows users to communicate with friends and functions just like a desktop-based instant messenger.

Dated July 20, 2008, Facebook launched "Facebook Beta", ie re-design the user interfaces on multiple networks. Mini-Feed and Wall combined, profiles separated into tabs, and they are trying to make it look more "simple". After initially giving users the option to switch, Facebook began to move all users to a new page version in September 2008.  dated December 11, 2008, it was announced that Facebook is testing an easier registration process.

The launch of these features have been anticipated while before this announcement, with some observers calling it a "killer Gmail". This system, which will be launched to all users of the site, incorporating text messaging, instant messaging, email, and regular messages, and will include the same privacy settings as Facebook service.
